DESCRIPTION:November 5\, 2026\n9 – 10:30am Pacific Time (Seattle) / 12 – 1:30pm Eastern\nvia Zoom\nBARNARD CENTER LECTURE SERIES\nThe talk will present our affiliative neuroscience perspective on resilience\, which contends that for young mammals\, who are born with immature brains and require caregiving do develop mechanisms of stress management and sociality\, systems that participate in bonding are those that sustain resilience.  I show how the biology of love and its core process biobehavioral synchrony underpin attachment and promote resilience. I describe how synchrony – the coordination of biology and behavior during social contact – emerges within the parent-infant bond\, grows to integrate more complex\, symbolic\, and reciprocal components of resonance\, and expands to other attachments the child will form throughout life\, impacting mental health up to adulthood. I address studies on brain-to-brain synchrony within the parent-child relationship and how they are altered by aspects of humans’ co-presence\, including chemosignals and technologically-assisted remote communication.  Translational implications are highlighted with the InSynch intervention for mothers suffering post-partum depression and its effects on symptom reduction\, caregiving behavior\, and inter-brain coordination.  The talk will conclude by contemplating how synchrony enables the transfer from the intimacy of the parent-infant bond to life within social groups and supports human endurance\, cooperation\, and the capacity for transcendence. \n \nRUTH FELDMAN\, PhD\n \nRuth Feldman\, PhD is the Simms-Mann Professor of Developmental Social Neuroscience at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzlia with joint appointment at Yale Child Study Center. \nWith degrees in music composition (summa cum-laude)\, neuroscience (with honors)\, clinical psychology (with honors)\, and developmental psychology and psychopathology\, her approach integrates perspectives from neuroscience\, human development\, philosophy\, clinical practice\, and the arts within an interpersonal frame and a behavior-based approach.  Her conceptual model on biobehavioral synchrony systematically describes how a lived experience within close relationships builds brain\, creates relationships\, confers resilience\, and promotes creativity.  Her studies were the first to detail the role of oxytocin in the formation of human social bonds. \nHer research is translational and informs the development of various interventions applied internationally.  Her observational tools are used in 17 countries\, translated to multiple languages\, and utilized in research on all facets of human social relationships in health and psychopathology.  She is a consultant on multiple international grants and a frequent keynote speaker in international conferences. Her studies often follow children from infancy to adulthood\, address topics that are highly relevant to the general public\, and receive substantial media attention. \nDr. Feldman is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and received multiple awards\, including a young musician award\, Rothschild award\, NARSAD independent investigator award (twice)\, the Zeskind award for best paper in Biological Psychiatry\, and the Graven’s Award for research on high-risk infants.

The course will be relevant to professionals who work with children\, adults\, and families. The course is intended for professionals in the mental health\, social care\, criminal justice\, educational and voluntary (NGO / not-for-profit) sectors. People in professions related to these can all benefit from the course. The course is suitable for post-qualified professionals and is also suitable for researchers and academics. Participants with experience of working directly with people are best suited to the course\, because of their practical experience of listening and responding to spoken discourse. \nAGENDA  \nDay One: Theory \n\nIntroduction to attachment theory\, specifically Dr. Patricia Crittenden’s Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of Attachment and Adaptation\, which provides a strengths-based\, function-focused alternative to symptom-based diagnosis.\nUnderstanding why attachment theory is a key to understanding the development of psychological problems\, personality disorders and offending behaviour.\nHow attachment theory signals the importance of relationship-based practice\, self-awareness\, and self-reflection on the part of the worker.\nUnderstanding the relationship between psychological trauma\, psychopathology\, personality disorder diagnoses and attachment strategies: A bio-psycho-social approach.\n\nDay Two: Assessment and Formulation  \n\nIntroduction to discourse analysis: understanding how attachment strategies are expressed in speech and behaviour.\nIntroduction to integrating DMM attachment theory with a variety of treatment models and approaches.\nPrinciples of purposeful eclecticism: adapting the intervention to the attachment strategies.\nIntroduction to family–systemic formulations and treatment planning based on the DMM model.\n\nDay Three: Treatment Planning and Intervention \n\nIntroduction to: applying the theory to treatment planning and intervention.\nExploring different approaches to intervention and principles of treatment emerging from the attachment-based model. This includes purposeful adaptation when working with people with psychological trauma.\nThe LEARN Model for promoting narrative integration.\nTools and techniques for attachment-based interventions.\n\nTrainer:  The training will be led by Clark Baim\, PhD\, and is based on two of his co-authored books\, Attachment-based Practice with Adults: Understanding Strategies and Promoting Positive Change (2023\, 2nd edition\, Pavilion. Available as an e-book or print version) and the Attachment-based Practice with Children\, Adolescents and Families (Pavilion\, 2022). Dr. Baim is a registered psychotherapist (UK Council for Psychotherapy) and a registered Senior Trainer and Clinical Supervisor with the British Psychodrama Association. He has worked in more than 35 countries and 300 organisations as a trainer\, group leader\, therapist\, and supervisor.  Dr. Baim has focused for twenty-five years on the study of attachment theory and the Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of Attachment and Adaptation with Dr. Patricia Crittenden. He is on the faculty of the Family Relations Institute\, the international training organisation for the DMM. He is a trainer and forensic-level coder of the DMM version of the Adult Attachment Interview. \n\nPlease note: this training must have a minimum of 35 people registered 2 week prior to the training date.
