SUMMARY:Promoting Infant Mental Health in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
DESCRIPTION:Soudabeh Givrad\, MD\nDecember 11\, 2023 January 29\, 2024\n9:00 am – 10:15 am Pacific Standard Time (Seattle)\nvia Zoom\nBARNARD CENTER FREE LECTURE SERIES\nPromoting infant mental health in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)\nThe environment and caregiving relationships in the early postnatal period are critical to an infant’s development\, with implications for physical\, social-emotional\, and neurocognitive development.  Premature and medically vulnerable infants hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are biologically and neurologically more vulnerable and go through many stressors including some degree of separation from their parents\, an intrusive and unnatural environment\, and painful and distressing procedures. their parents\, in turn\, experience higher rates of psychological distress and can face challenges in establishing an optimal relationship with their babies in this setting. In this talk\, Dr. Givrad will point out some of the ways we can think about promoting premature and medically vulnerable infants’ wellbeing. \nSoudabeh Givrad\, MD is a perinatal and infant psychiatrist and an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine. She is the director of the Maternal-Infant Psychiatry Program at Weill Cornell Medicine and the Perinatal and Infant Psychiatry Fellowship. She has expertise in treating psychiatric disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period and works with families of infants and young children in parent-infant psychotherapy when families face issues with attachment\, bonding\, medical traumas\, or other regulatory disorders of infancy and early childhood. Academically\, she has been working on bringing increased attention to psychiatric disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period\, and to increase awareness of the critical importance of supporting families of young infants to optimize their development and bringing a continuum of care from pre-conception to age 3 for families. She has also been working on increasing training opportunities in perinatal and infant mental health for mental health clinicians. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Strategies to Prevent Parent-Child Separation and New Approaches in Child Welfare - April 2\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:The First Clinic\nApril 2\, 2024\n9:00 am – 10:30 am Pacific Time (Seattle)\nvia Zoom\nBARNARD CENTER FREE LECTURE SERIES\nThis lecture is an engaging session on the transformative efforts of the Family Intervention Response to Stop Trauma (FIRST) Clinic\, a notable medical-legal partnership in Washington State. This clinic is at the forefront of providing essential legal representation to new and expecting parents facing Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement\, with a steadfast goal to prevent the separation of families. \nIn this presentation\, participants will gain comprehensive insights into the key outcomes and benefits that the FIRST Clinic has achieved. From preventing the unnecessary removal of children from their homes to creating unlikely partnerships with Department of Children\, Youth\, and Families\, our discussion will cover the tangible impacts of these efforts on keeping families together and fostering stable\, supportive environments for children’s growth. \nFurthermore\, we will delve into the personal experiences of parents who have engaged with the FIRST Clinic. Through the lens of a Parent Ally—a crucial figure within our team who combines legal advocacy with lived experience—attendees will hear firsthand accounts of the clinic’s role in transforming lives. This narrative will underscore the importance of empathy\, empowerment\, and community in navigating the challenges posed by CPS involvement. \nParticipants will leave with a deep understanding of: \n\nThe foundational goals and achievements of the FIRST Legal Clinic in safeguarding family unity.\nThe multifaceted benefits of legal representation and advocacy provided by the clinic.\nThe profound impact of the FIRST Clinic’s work as experienced by parents\, illustrated through real stories of resilience and support.\n\nThis session is designed not just to inform but to inspire action and collaboration among professionals and community members alike\, highlighting how legal advocacy\, coupled with compassionate support\, can create lasting positive change for families across Washington State. \nBios:\nAdam Ballout: Adam has been a public defender for 13 years working to help reunify families. Frustration and disappointment with how the legal system treated families and separated infants and new mothers led him to help create the FIRST Clinic and its medical-legal partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics. Adam is a former board chair of the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV) and the Domestic Violence services of Snohomish County (DVS). \nTaila AyAy: Taila AyAy is a graduate of Seattle University School of Law. She has dedicated her career since 2009 to championing the rights of families. Her practice focuses mainly on representation of parents and children in dependency litigation\, administrative law\, and family law. She also has experience in tribal representation and has worked as guardian ad litem. She is passionate about social justice and increasing equitable access to resources for her clients\, their families\, and the community. Taila has worked remote from her home in California ever since moving from Washington a few years ago. This arrangement works well for her number one boy\, a sweet golden retriever\, named Dax. \nNeil Weiss: Neil is a passionate attorney who has contributed hundreds of pro bono hours for FIRST client representation and program development. While he has a background in accounting\, his legal practice includes parent and child representation in juvenile dependency\, criminal defense\, family law\, protection orders\, civil litigation\, and administrative law. He has experience as a commissioner and judge pro tem in King County Superior Court\, Snohomish County District Courts\, and Monroe Municipal Court. He has presented at multiple statewide training programs regarding representation in child welfare cases. He enjoys cooking and plays ice hockey in local leagues. \nJennifer Justice: Jennifer Justice is a dedicated parent with previous involvement in the child welfare system. She initially entered the system in 2015 due to struggles with substance use disorder and unaddressed mental health issues. Her journey through the dependency system ultimately concluded with the termination of her parental rights. Nevertheless\, Jennifer has maintained a strong and nurturing connection with her children\, as they found placement with caring relatives. In 2020\, Jennifer faced a family voluntary case\, but thanks in part to the exceptional support of the F.I.R.S.T Legal Clinic Team\, she promptly addressed her parenting style. Remarkably\, her family voluntary case was resolved and dismissed within a mere six months. Jennifer’s profound personal experiences within the child welfare system have ignited a passionate commitment to preventing new mothers from encountering similar challenges. In 2021\, she joined the WSPAC (Washington State Parent Advisory Committee) and took her dedication a step further by obtaining her Associate of Applied Arts Degree in Legal Administrative Assisting in 2022. August 2022 marked a significant milestone in Jennifer’s journey as she embarked on her career as a Parent Ally with the F.I.R.S.T Legal Clinic\, continuing her impactful work within the realm of child welfare. \nGina Wassemiller: Gina Wassemiller is the founding Parent Ally for the FIRST Legal Clinic. She contracts with the Washington State Office of Public Defense\, Parents Representation Program\, as a Social Service Worker and facilitates the Life During & After CPS parent support group. Gina has many years of experience working directly with families involved in the child welfare system to overcome obstacles and reach a positive outcome. Gina has a history of contributing to meaningful work that positively impacts families on a larger scale as a former member of Snohomish County’s Table of Ten and Snohomish Parent Ally Committee\, as well as launching and leading her local Parents for Parents program. She is an active alumnus of the Washington State Parent Ally Committee. Gina brings true passion and hope to the work she does with families because she has firsthand experience. She is a survivor of domestic violence and a recovering addict. Her first child welfare case ended in relinquishment of her parental rights\, followed by a subsequent voluntary case that ended in family preservation. Gina embraces her belief that a positive outcome is one a parent can live with forever. She meets parents where they are and instills hope into each parent she works with. Gina is living proof that People Change and Families Reunite. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Attachment\, Neurodevelopment & Psychopathology with Dr. Patricia Crittenden
DESCRIPTION:May 6 – 8 and 20 – 22\, 2024\n9 a.m. – 1 p.m. PDT (Seattle time)\nvia Zoom\nThis course focuses on the development\, prevention and treatment of psychological disorder from infancy to adulthood. It weaves together theory\, human development\, assessment\, case examples and treatment applications to reframe maladaptive behavior in terms of strategies for self-protection. The course emphasizes the process of adaptation and developmental pathways that carry risk for psychopathology. The course is aimed at professionals who work with troubled families or individuals\, including\, psychiatrists\, psychologists\, lawyers\, social workers\, teachers and nurses. \nThe aspects of neural development to be covered are chosen to enhance treatment of psychological maladaptation of adults and children (including families with child maltreatment\, psychiatric disorder\, and criminality). The course emphasizes adaptation and ways that professionals can change to increase the probability that clients will change. Reorganisation and building resilience are treated as central to successful intervention. General and Family Functional Formulations will be introduced to highlight DMM Integrative Treatment. \nThe model used is the Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of Attachment and Adaptation. The DMM is a strength-based model that is relevant to individuals who are at-risk\, have been exposed to danger\, display disturbed or maladaptive behaviour\, or are diagnosed as having a psychiatric disorder. Emphasis is given to how early and current attachment relationships explain maladaptive behaviour and how these tied to culture and dangerous conditions. \nPatricia M. Crittenden\, PhD is a developmental psychopathologist with many years’ experience as an academic and practitioner in child maltreatment\, attachment theory and family therapy. She was taught by Mary Ainsworth and was on the Faculties of Psychology at the Universities of Virginia and Miami. She held visiting positions at the Universities of Helsinki and Bologna\, the Clark Institute of Psychiatry (Canada)\, San Diego State University (USA) and Edith Cowan University (Australia). She developed the Dynamic-Maturational Model (DMM) of Attachment and Adaptation and is one of the founders of the International Association for the Study of Attachment (IASA). In 2004\, she received a Career Achievement Award from the European Family Therapy Association. She has published more than 150 scientific papers and several books.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT) - July 23\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:July 23\, 2024\n9:00 am – 10:30 am Pacific Time (Seattle)\nvia Zoom\nBARNARD CENTER FREE LECTURE SERIES\nThis webinar will introduce the evidence-based mind-body intervention called Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT)\, including experiential exercises based on MABT processes.  MABT is designed to teach clients how to develop and deepen interoceptive awareness\, i.e. awareness of internal body sensations\, to promote self-care and emotion regulation.  Dr. Cynthia Price developed MABT within the context of her clinical practice as a somatic therapist\, and has been researching the effectiveness of this approach over the past 20 years. Her research is focused on the benefits of MABT in the treatment of substance use disorder\, chronic pain\, and for recovery from sexual trauma. This webinar will be focused on what clients/patients learn through engaging in MABT\, the related increases in health and well-being\, and the interoceptive skills that are integrated into patients’ lives post-intervention.  We will also discuss the implications of this research for clinical care and nursing practice\, as well as for clinician self-care to increase self-regulation. \nCynthia Price\, PhD MA LMT is a Research Professor at the University of Washington and Director of the non-profit Center for Mindful Body Awareness. Her clinical and research expertise is focused on interoceptive awareness and its role in health and well-being. She developed Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT)\, a mindfulness-based approach designed to facilitate interoceptive awareness and related skills for self-care and emotion regulation. Dr. Price’s research is aimed at the study of MABT within community care\, particularly for those in recovery from trauma\, chemical dependency\, chronic pain or other life stressors. She co-authored two scales to measure interoceptive awareness: the Scale of Body Connection (SBC) and the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA). Trainings for clinicians and therapists interested in learning how to integrative interoceptive awareness skills in their practice – for their own self-care and for the care of their clients – are available through the Center.  Cynthia is committed to increasing access to integrative health care services\, particularly for underserved populations\, through her research\, teaching\, and service. \nREGISTER HERE
