Using BabyCues cards is a fun and informative way to visually convey information to parents and caregivers about the ways in which babies and young children communicate with us non-verbally.
It is also a great way to educate yourself, whether a parent or parent educator, about the amazing non-verbal behavioral cues that babies and young children use. This is especially true for understanding children that are too young to speak. These cards will also help you recognize many of the subtle cues you may have been unaware of before.
Non-verbal cues are the primary manner in which young children “speak”. Babies are non-verbal, and adults are too. Many of the cues you will see in this card set are also cues that adults use. Think about the last time you were uncomfortable at a meeting or on a date. Did you put your hand to your mouth? Did you yawn? Did you clear your throat and look away? Did you put your hand behind your neck? These are typical cues used by adults, children and infants to regulate interactions, either to disengage momentarily or reflect uncertainty or stress.
By responding to these cues and adjusting our behavior we enhance our relationship with infants and toddlers.
